Avira AntiVir Personal

I’ve known Avira offers a free antivirus for a few years, but until now I had never tried it. I had decided to create a virtual machine to run all my accounting and banking software on and this weekend I was installing a fresh copy of Windows XP into the virtual machine. I decided to do this as an extra layer of protection from viruses and spyware that might be looking for my passwords, bank accounts, etc. This way, everything in the virtual machine is isolated from any infections or malware that may be present on the host machine.

Of course it is still vital to have antivirus installed on the virtual machine so what better time to try out Avira’s free version? Avira’s installer is only 48.9 MB in size and was a quick download from the Avira website. After clicking on the link to download the free file, you are presented an offer to get the premium free- if you shop at one of several brand name sites.

Installation is very simple and the installer makes it easy to simply follow the instructions. For advanced users, there are additional settings that can be configured during installation, or after. Selecting “Expert” mode in the configuration windows brings up all the extra options

Even though there is a dizzying number of options, the menu is easy to navigate and understand. Though one setting caught my attention- the “Restart settings” under “Update.” Most antivirus I have used don’t require a restart after an update, so I wonder if this just demonstrates a high attention to detail- providing extra options that may not be necessary- or is Avira more prone to need a restart after an update than other antivirus? There is certainly nothing wrong with restarts, except is some joker checked the “Restart computer without query” option and the computer restarts just as you get up to go grab another cup of coffee and you lose all your unsaved work.

So far Avira seems quick, responsive, and easy to use. During installation I turned on all the security features and my work hasn’t been interrupted by Avira yet. Time will tell how well it works.

Free Antivirus Overview

Cut to the chase

Below I have compiled a list of antivirus publishers offering free solutions and some of their features. Generally, if the vendor doesn’t have a free version, they will offer a free trial if you really want to give their software a go. Some I have tried, most I have not tried yet. Check back regularly to see which I have updated!

UPDATE: There is nothing more frustrating than a *free* program that does nothing. I would rather have a fully functional free trial than a totally free program that will report a ton of problems, but not let you do anything unless you buy the program, or sign-up for some offer. See Pareto Logic below for more.

Avast! – Antivirus + Antispyware. Paid versions include advanced firewall, secure online shopping and banking, and antispam.

AVG – AVG’s free version is antivirus only. Paid versions offer safe chatting and downloading, support, secure online banking and shopping, wifi protection, and PC and application performance monitoring.

Avira – Anitvirus only on free version. Upgrading will get you antiphishing, active protection, protection from malicious websites, bootable rescue CD, protection from downloading viruses from the web, and enhanced mail protection.

BitDefender – No free version (that I can find) but they offer several free utilities: Online Scanner, virus specific removal tools, Quickscan, BitDefender Free Edition (WAIT! I thought there wasn’t a free edition. Guess they should make it easier to find).

BullGuard – No free version. Find their product line here.

CA Anti-Virus – No free version. Find their product line here.

Comodo Firewall + Antivirus – Comodo’s free offerings include antivirus and firewall protection as separate downloads so you can choose which to install. Paid versions include proactive security and support in addition to the antivirus and firewall.

Counter Spy – No free version. Find their product line here. Counter spy is a little confusing as they seem to be marketed under two different companies -  GFI and VIPRE (TM) which seems to be the GFIs home antivirus solution. Continue reading

Hello and Welcome to Find Free Antivirus!

Free Antivirus is a great option for many consumers. I have personally never paid for an antivirus subscription for my personal computers. Most of the top antivirus software publishers offer free versions of their software. Generally, those versions are just as capable at detecting and stopping viruses as the paid versions- though you will usually lose many of the bells and whistles such as webpage scanning or antispyware.

We’ll take a look at some of my favorites first.

Avast! Ye Free Antivirus

“Aaaarrggh! Avast ye matey I’m here to steal yer treasure!”

The first thing I think of when I hear the name “Avast!” is a Pirate is trying to steal your treasure- be it passwords, account numbers, pictures, or just ravaging the data on your computer. Avast! has been a favorite AV for me for a long time. I only uninstalled it to give other AVs a try. It was simple and quick to install, wasn’t a system hog, and seemed to work well. My only real gripe is the interface is a little wierd and some settings were hard to find. Two other versions are also available – Pro and Internet Security. Pro adds Avast! SafeZone™ to protect your accounts while shopping or banking online. Avast! Internet Security also includes an advanced firewall and SPAM filter.

If you are looking for a new antivirus – Avast! is a good place to start.
